Qualcomm broadened its legal battle with Apple. The company filed a complaint to the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) stating that some versions of Apple’s iPhone and iPad with Intel chips infringed its 6 patents and asked ITC to stop these infringing products from selling in the United States.
Qualcomm said the company will ask ITC to impose a ban to bar Apple from importing infringing products into the United States. The company also filed a lawsuit for related compensation in federal court in California this Thursday. Qualcomm, which is also Apple’s chip supplier, said the six patents enable the device to function properly without draining the battery.
In the complaint, Qualcomm asked ITC to ban iPhones that use cellular baseband processors other than those supplied by Qualcomm’s affiliates. The company did not name Intel, which started supplying chips for some iPhones starting with the iPhone 7. Qualcomm did not accuse Intel chips for violating its patents but claimed that the way Apple uses these chips in the iPhone violates patents.
Analysts said that ITC usually takes 16 months to complete investigation of cases; therefore, the case was unlikely to affect Apple’s 10th anniversary iPhone launch this fall and might not have immediate effect on Apple.
